This is how I currently make mine and it works well enough for me.

All you need is a blackboard pin, some wire, your chosen fibers (in this case SYN Fiber) and a sturdy dubbing twister.

First stick your blackboard pin into a piece of wood or as I did into my table top. Twist the end of your wire around the pin and roll the wire out flat on top of the table. You can make your wire brush as long as you like.

Cut your fibers in the length that you want and start placing you fibers on top of the wire. In this case I have placed the end of the fibers close to the edge of the wire, but you can place it in the middle or any way you want it depending on how you want your brush to look.

Carry on doing this until you have reached the length that you want. You can add different colours as you go along. Try to keep the fibers fairly spares and make sure that you spread them out over the wire to avoid and clumps when you spin the brush.

Once you have placed all your fibers on the wire take the end and hook it over your dubbing twister. Fold the wire back over the fibers so that the fibers are sandwiched between the wire. Twist the wire around your blackboard pin again to secure it. At this point keep tension on the wire by slightly pulling on the dubbing twister.

While keeping tension on the wire start to slowly twist the wire by spinning the dubbing twister. As the wire start to twist around itself lift the dubbing brush up so that it can spin freely in the air.

Keep on spinning the brush

Occasionally you would need to use a dubbing needle to loosen any trapped fibers as you go along. Keep on spinning the brush until you feel that the fibers are secured enough and wont be able to come loose.

At this point you can use a barbers hair comb to comb out the hair and
to loosen any more trapped fibers. Use a wire cutter to cut the ends of
the wire and you are done.

To use the brush simply fold the fibers to one side and tie it onto your hooks shank and twist it around stroking the fibers to the back as you go along.
Today was the first time that I got some time to try them out. They certainly make tying Surf Candies easy and they look great to boost.
I received these sample packs of material quite a while ago and have never used it. It is quite similar to EP Fibres and works perfectly for these flies. It creates an awsome profile for baitfish.
Cannot remember when last I have sat down and tied so many flies in one go. Luckily these are fairly easy to tie.Today I tied up some crease flies. Hope the fish likes them.
Our streams have been very low and with high temperatures it just was not worth it to venture out. In the last two month I have only gone fishing once and that day turned out in a blank. At least I am now officially on leave for the next few weeks and with our traditional Easter weekend rain things are looking better. I have a date with a small stream tomorrow so let's hope I can get some fish.

In the meantime I have been filling up my salt water fly boxes in anticipation for a week-long trip that the missus and I is going on next week. Today I cranked out a couple of clousers and while getting bored from tying the same thing over and over I also started playing around and came up with the below fly. Going to tie up a few more in some different colour combinations and hope that the fish like them.
It is basically just the standard CDC and Elk fly, but I use a dark deer hair instead of the normal bleached elk hair and add a bright post and some flash to the fly.
Once he got it right he took these pictures of them and then combined it with background photos of rivers and streams. The photos might be manipulated but they are still incredible.

This is a little mayfly that I have been tying to imitate the black Mayflies that hatch on our rivers. They are tied on a Dohiku dry fly hook, have a body made from Hends body Quill in black with a yellow rib. Both flies as below has a wing of Snowshoe rabbit fur, but the bottom one has some additional black hackle around the wing and the wing is a bit thinner. Both also have some CDC dubbing around the thorax.
Got me in the mood to tie a fly despite the muggy weather. This is the first one of the vice. I will do a full review on these kits soon, just need to play around with it a bit.
With high temperatures and low rivers I haven't been doing any fishing at all. Even the nights have been freakishly warm so I haven't tied much either.

This is just a post to let you all know (or the 2 of you that emailed me and actually check in from time to time) that I am still here. For your dedication I have added three poorly Photoshopped photo's from my last trip in December 2010.

Hopefully I will be able to share something meaningful with you soon.
Well the flies arrived just a day before Christmas and they are exquisite. Jeff obviously put a lot of care in making these and the poppers especially looks to good to be fished. I previously made a post of some poppers that I tied based on Jeff's flies but the real thing put my creations to shame.

If you haven't done so already head on over to Jeff's blog and check it out. I know he also sells these flies and believe me it is well worth the money. Hopefully I will be able to test these out within the next few weeks and report back, though I know all of them will catch fish.
We had some hard rain in the week and even had some reports of some snow on the mountain early in the week. It is supposed to be high summer and we have had snow!!! The rain made the river flow a little higher than what is normal for this time of year but at least it will let us fish for longer into the summer. The weather today was absolutely perfect and the fish though so to. There was no hatches that I could see and I also didn't see any fish rising, but all 20 odd rainbow's I caught today was caught on a dry fly.

With the high flows I got snapped off 3 times when a fish ran downstream and I could not follow it fast enough. I was fishing with 8X tippet as I forgot my 5x and 6x tippet at home. When I reached to top of my beat I turned around and had some fun catching small mouth bass with streamers on the way downstream.
I also decided to clean my tying desk today. I normally sit down and tie one or two flies and always end up either sticking the flies in whatever piece of foam or box that is close by. Well, apparently I have been tying a lot more than I though as I found a crap load of flies all over the place.
I previously highlighted a short clip of Ed Herbst first video A South African Fly Tying Journey with Ed Herbst and friends and I am exited to say they Ed has just released “Terrestrials” the second in the series.

Background info

The first in the series with Ed Herbst as narrator, interviewer and fly tyer and Andrew Ingram as camera operator and video editor was extremely well received both here and abroad. It was generally agreed that it significantly raised the bar for DVDs of this genre and this was hardly surprising given their decades of experience in the communication field and Ed’s acknowledged expertise as a fly tyer and fly fishing historian.

The DVD covers five innovative interpretations of insects which are important to trout and other fish, the grasshopper, the ant, the beetle, the inchworm and the crane fly.

Ed contributes two flies, his hopper with its effective leg configuration – a pattern which Tom Sutcliffe describes on his website as the best such pattern (http://www.tomsutcliffe.co.za/fly-tying/111-tying-ed-herbsts-hopper) and his Split-Back Beetle. The latter incorporates a sighter post combining orange egg yarn and krystal flash to provide both a contrasting colour and small sparkles of light on the back of the pattern. Foam beetles, while deadly, are notoriously difficult to see because they float flush with water surface and Ed’s pattern solves this problem.

Renowned Rhodes Guide, Fred Steynberg, demonstrates a foam ant pattern which he has developed over several years and which he says, when correctly presented to a sighted fish, is “never refused”.

Well-known Aliwal North custom rod/net builder, Mario Geldenhuys,(http://www.customflyrods.co.za/) demonstrates an ingenious inchworm pattern. The extended foam body is built on a needle and then transferred to a #18 hook. The comparatively large body floats the tiny hook with great buoyancy and Mario says this quick-and-easy to tie pattern is as effective on yellowfish as it is on trout.

Tony Biggs’ RAB has been catching trout for decades and Philip Meyer’s parachute version is easier to cast into the wind and is exceptionally effective when a breeze is ruffling the water and activating its squirrel tail “legs”. Philip says it is exceptionally effective when crane flies are on the water but also works well as a searching pattern when nothing is hatching and fish are not rising.

My thoughts:

I thoroughly enjoyed the first DVD and was looking forward to this second in the series. The flies in this volume is well known flies to the South African Fly fisherman but before this DVD there was no real step by step tutorials on how to tie them properly. I know that I have tried to copy them myself with varying degrees of success. This DVD has certainly helped me and with no doubt it will be a great help to both novice and expert fly tiers. These flies were designed by South African Fly tiers for South African conditions but will work equally well wherever in the world you might find yourself. The video footage is expertly shot with clear instructions and the tiers explain the history of the flies as well as why they use the material that they do.

A South African Fly Tying journey with Ed Herbst and friends Volume 2 is well worth adding to your library.
So far this season I have always ventured out by myself to fish and it was great fun to fish with Roland again. It was also the first time this season that Roland came out to fish the streams, and for a change the fish, the weather God's and the stream levels played along to make it a memorable day out.

We started to fish just after 8am and Roland had the honors to fish the first run. On his 5th cast a pretty little rainbow took his dry. I casted shortly after he landed his fish and about three casts later I also had my first rainbow for the day. With the pressure of blanking out of the way we settled down and slowly fished up the river. The next 40minutes or so however things were dead quite and I wondered if bad owmen of catching a fish so quickly was going to come true.

Roland landing his first fish of the season

We eventually arrived at a lovely little run and Roland was fishing the one side and me the other. Roland got a take on the dry and while he was busy landing it I also get a hook up. From then on we landed fish after fish from every likely looking spot. At one spot there were a few fish rising to a hatch and we made turns catching all of them.
It was just one of those magical "one fly all day" kind of days and fishing with a good friend made it so much better. The last couple a months have been hectic at work and I don't make enough time to go fishing these days. A day like this reminded me to do it more often.
I got out on the water slightly before 8am and when I arrived a downstream wind was already starting to blow. We had some rain earlier in the week as well and the river was flowing quite a bit stronger than I expected. Never the less I rigged up and headed down to the river. It was one of those days though where you wonder if it wasn't better to stay in bed. On the first cast I manged to get a tangle in my leader which had me cutting everything off. From there things just got worse. As mentioned the river was a bit high and the by now strong downstream wind made getting a decent cast in next to impossible. I did manage to get about 8 fish and also missed a few, but after numerous tangle's, a head first plunge into a deep pool and hooking myself and every branch around me, my heart just wasn't in it anymore, so I just mechanically kept on fishing till my exit point.
I started out with some poppers and the smaller fish were hitting the poppers all the time. It really was fun targeting individual fish and then to see a few small bass all storm at the fly as soon as it lands. The bigger fish would however just swim up to the fly and inspect it for a few minutes before it would turn up it nose and swim away.
Work and other commitments have kept me away from the rivers, though I did get to go fish this past Sunday after first watching our national team bow out of the Rugby World Cup. I got on the water rather late and only fished for a few hours. The water levels are near perfect and I managed to catch quite a number of Rainbow's on both dry flies and nymphs. I took lots of pics but when I downloaded them I found out that I had my camera on the wrong setting all the times so all I have is a mix of blurry photos. When I have the time I might turn them into some obscure work of art though.

Anyway with not much else to report I though that I would share a few random items with you guys and girls.

Firstly a new Fly Fishing E-Zine. With these thing a dime a dozen now a days I can at least say that this is a Proudly South African one, though there is not much content about South African fly fishing in the first edition.
Some local guys took on a epic trip to Bassas Da India of the African coast. They are in the process of writing an epic trip report on the Flytalk Forum. This must be one of the best trip reports I have ever read. Check it out HERE.
Unfortunately the weather Gods didn't want to play along and I arrived at the river to a howling downstream wind at 8Am this morning. It was also freezing cold and the sky looked like it was going to pour buckets of water down on me at any moment. Nevertheless I rigged up, but on layers of clothing and cursed myself for not bringing my waders along. As I got to the river I quickly realized that there was no point in fishing upstream as I just couldn't get a cast in. My line and flies just kept on blowing back at me, so I turned around, added some heavy nymphs and a softhackle to my tippet and started to fish downstream.

The river is also still quite a bit high and in between this and the wind fishing wasn't easy. I hopped downstream from pool to pool for an hour an managed to land one brown trout for the effort. This just isn't my preferred way of fishing and as I turned around I changed my flies to a dry and dropper and fished back upstream as the wind has dropped slightly by this time. I missed one fish that came up to my dry and landed another brownie. By the time I got back to my starting point the heavens looked like it was going to open up at any moment and sure enough as I got to my car it started raining. All in all it wasn't a very successful day, but at least I got to finally get out on the streams again and I did get to try out my new reel.
Getting back home I remembered that we got a notice that out power will be of for most of the day, and boy I realized today how spoiled we are. Normally Sundays are for playing around on the internet, catching up on some movies, and relaxing around home. Well without any electricity we kind of wondered what we are going to do the whole day. My wife suggested the shops and before I could come up with something else I was dragged away.

Returning home I decided to tie some flies (something I haven't really been doing much of lately) to fill some of the gaps in my flybox. After about 20 flies my eyes started to droop and it was snooze time. By the time I woke up the power was still not back on so the fire was lit and we had some delicious Lamb chops and pork ribs on the fire.
Last year this time I would have been out a few times already, and the way things stand at the moment it will be another two weeks before I get the chance. I picked up a sweet Sage Click III reel for a bargain and am dying to give it a try. I have even been putting of spooling it with a new line and some backing because I fear that if I do that I am going to have to call in sick at work to go try it out.
I have also been busy setting up the shop, but being technologically left behind it turns out more of a mission than I though. I though by doing it myself I would know all the in and outs so that when things go wrong I would at least be able to fix it. As it turns out most of the things that goes wrong is of my own doing. I am hoping to change the shops theme as soon as I figure out how to do it.
Apart from that I have also been tying some flies that is going on sale in the shop.

Those of you that know me knows that I hate tying the same fly over and over, so selling flies will not be a full time thing, but it always is nice to have some box fillers for the <strike>suckers</strike> clients to add to their orders.
