Random Stuff - Africa Edition

Things on the fishing front has been rather slow lately. Work and other commitments have kept me away from the rivers, though I did get to go fish this past Sunday after first watching our national team bow out of the Rugby World Cup. I got on the water rather late and only fished for a few hours. The water levels are near perfect and I managed to catch quite a number of Rainbow's on both dry flies and nymphs. I took lots of pics but when I downloaded them I found out that I had my camera on the wrong setting all the times so all I have is a mix of blurry photos. When I have the time I might turn them into some obscure work of art though.

Anyway with not much else to report I though that I would share a few random items with you guys and girls.

Firstly a new Fly Fishing E-Zine. With these thing a dime a dozen now a days I can at least say that this is a Proudly South African one, though there is not much content about South African fly fishing in the first edition.

Some local guys took on a epic trip to Bassas Da India of the African coast. They are in the process of writing an epic trip report on the Flytalk Forum. This must be one of the best trip reports I have ever read. Check it out HERE.

A friend of mine also send me the below cellphone pictures of a monster Barber (Catfish) that he caught on a 9 weight rod and a Fish Skull fly this past weekend. The fish took him 35minutes to land.Awesome stuff.

Saterday small stream fishing

A friend and myself spend the morning fishing one of our streams. Instead of the usual photos I though I would share a small movie of the day. The quality is pretty crap as it was shot on my little point and shoot camera, but I though it might be worth sharing.




We left early morning to a beautiful sunrise. The air temperature was a cool 12C and the water temperature a cooler 10C. The fishing started of slow with only one fish in the first hour or so. It soon picked up and we started to land more rainbows. It was one of those weird off days for me where nothing seems to go right. First I couldn't get my leader to turn over, and then I has a serious case of bad knots that kept on breaking off. Eventually I changed my complete leader setup and things improved until I kept getting stuck in trees and rocks, making bad casts and spending half the time undoing tangles. I did manage to land a few fish though. All fish apart from one that we caught fell to nymphs. We were really hoping for one of those magical days that we get on our streams where you don't even have to bother tying on a nymph, but it was not meant to be.

It was a fun day out though and with only 9 more days remaining of the river season we made the best of it.

An easy Buzzer

I was buggering around on Youtube last night and found the below fly that I tied two years ago. I have completely forgotten about this and though I would share my filming skills with you. I promise I wont quite my day job just yet.
